Looking back at your preliminary task (the continuity editing task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

Preliminary Task Vs Silentium

When looking back at my first project I can see what could be changed and added but with that there are parts that I could took from it and could of added into Silentium.

Preliminary Task: Was the first real taste of the pressure of film making with all the pre-production work that me and jack had to do between us. With that we had to learn the shots and angles needed for a video but in our first video we needed to have certain instructions and shot we had to use and learn and they were:

The 180 degree rule is when you have two people in a conversation that are opposite each other the space between them makes the line of a protractor which shows you where you are allowed to go with the camera but if you go on the other side of the 180 degree angle then you would be braking the rule.

Match on action is where let's say a person walk to a door open it and enter the room, so you would have the shot of the person opening the door from the outside and the next shot would be from inside the room shooting the person coming the room pushing the door open.

Shot reverse shot is where two people are having a convocation and it switches between the two people to see the other speak to the other with the camera over there left shoulder if the other person is looking to the right to speak, then on the right should for the other person as the guy then speaking must be looking left.

From the Preliminary Task I have learnt the basics for the main task, the editing process was annoying as it took ages to load and it made the video come out all pixelated and barely hard to see what is going on.
The two thing's I would change is that I should of added some non diegetic sound in the parts where there was no sound involved. The second is to make sure the lighting is able to pick it up properly with the camera.

Looking at Silentium I would say its ten time better as the lighting is used better then it was in the first video the picture its self its much more high quality then the first video as I edited this one on my own editing software on my laptop which is easy to use plus it helped putting non diegetic sound in over the top of the video.
With this project I had to make a production company and logo to put on at the begging of the video as if it was like a real film, the main part of this project was to be able to make an opening sequence with the opening credits running on the screen which was easier then I thought it was going to be.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Google
I used Google for all of my searching for my key part of this blog which is my research as it is the best search engine to use for everything as it is the fastest  with the most sights available to use.
The benefits of using Google is that it is fast and it has everything that is linked to the word out are looking for. The down side is the advertisement on the right hand side when you have searched for something it get really annoying.
Blogger

This is where I put all my notes from class onto the Internet for other people around the world could have a look which could help them with their studies in media, Blogger is used as it is a need for my course and this is where my teachers can see my progress throughout the year.
The benefit of Blogger is that my teacher can comment on the posts that I have uploaded. The down side is that sometimes it doesn't embed prezi very well.

Internet Explorer
internet-explorer-9-logo
Is the Internet system that I use to access the Internet at school as it is the default setting on the computers. The benefits of this system is that it can access Google and other search engines that help me with my work. The down sound is that it is really slow to search for the thing you are searching for.

Computer

I use a computer at school a desktop unit that is in our media class which is where I do most of my blogging and work on. The benefit of using the school's computers is that it had a I5 processor, the processor what makes the PC run fast. The down side to the schools PCs is that it don't have some software that I have at home.

Chrome

Chrome is the system that I use at home to access the Internet at home with, with chrome also being Google I can navigate around the web easier as the tool bar has everything in need on it. The benefit of chrome is that it is powered by Google this this helps to get to anything that is related to Google faster like: Docs, Gmail and much more. The down side is that the school doesn't use it on their computers.

Laptop

I use a laptop at home to do my media work as it has everything that is needed to make and edit a video. Plus this is how I get my work done when I'm not at school. The benefit is that I have software that the school doesn't have. The down side is I can't connect to the schools Internet so I can't bring it in a do work.

YouTube
Is where we all upload our videos to put on our blogs as it is easy to upload them first then put them on our blogs as it is harder to upload them straight to our blogs as we have had problems in the past with it, also we can get feedback from other people around the world. The benefits of Youtube is that people around the world can comment on them. The down side of this is that some people could comment something that has nothing to do with he video.

Camera

I used a camera to film Silentium with as we needed use a camera to film it with also the schools one could film in HD which we did do. The benefits of the camera is that I dint have to pay to buy my own as the school had the equipment, also the school's shoots in HD as well. The down side is that the picture sometimes comes out not clear.

Cyberlink Power Director

This is the software that I used to edit my title sequence as it was free with the computer and it is I would say better than the one we have at school as this one is faster and easy to understand and navigate around. The benefit is that I have the free version on my laptop and it is easy to use and learn. The only down side is that if a video is longer than five minutes then a water mark comes on at the end of the video.

Art Of The Title
ats_logo_example6
This is the website where I got the images from to write analyses from as it has hundreds of films available to look at with director's commentary about how and why they did what they did for their opening title sequence to their films. The benefit of this website is that you can look for films and it would give you the opening sequence or a clip of the film with it would have commentary by the director. The down side is that the site doesn't have every film made on it.

Free Play Music

This is where I got the music from that I have playing throughout the title sequence of Silentium the web site was friendly as it was powered by YouTube so it was easy to use and understand, some music on there is free or you have to by the copy rights for the music that you would like to use.
The benefit to this website is that you can search for any music you want, the down side is that you might have to pay for the copy rights to the music.

Prezi
I used Prezi to make some of my posts more creative and interactive with the audience of whoever maybe looking at my blog. The benefit of using Prezi is that you can have your friends connect on one Prezi so they can change thinks and make the prezi better. The down side is that it has a problem to embed itself on to a blogger post.

Evaluation 5

How did you attract/address your audience?
Silentium would be a different film to other horror movies as the killer would win in this film as to other horror films the killer would always die. As you can see from the opening title sequence he is very quiet as he is a guy that has a lot of ideas and plans going on in his mind, he is a intelligent in his own demented way.

The protagonist in this film dies and you can see from the beginning as the opening title sequence is the ending of the film so the rest of the film is a prequel to follow up on the story for the ending of the film.

With the ending of the film it makes it able to have a sequel compared to horror films that just end because the antagonist is killed in the first film, this film would have more films to make it a serious of films rather then just one.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Feed Back For Silentium

On this blog entry the people what have given feedback didn't want to be recorded so in stead they gave me written feedback for me to put on here.

Hannah Loughlin - When I first saw Silentium, I could immediately tell it was a horror as the music set the mood. The shots were brilliant and my favourite was the one in the first persons prospective when the man went to gap the guy and he got knocked over. Acting was really good and the voice was very easy to hear and understand with the music in the background. The transitioning was extraordinary and exceptional. The names of who was involved were very clear. The plot was very easy to pick up on and understand. Perhaps, instead of the names of who was involved, they should of put the name on the same scene as the actor when he is on the screen.

Jack Heptin - Overall very specifically liked the ending because it makes the viewer want to see more. Great acting. you can tell it is a horror due to the music. I would carry on watching this if it was the whole film. Maybe the axe man could be more psychotic.

Connor Fabela - The use of transitions for the opening credits was exaordinary. Mad the aperients almost like the real thing, interesting how you included a horror related production company. Costume and scenery was perfect It felt like a horror. The use of the first person was exceptional it makes the project unique as its not common in horror films. Dialect was distracting as I don’t believe someone in his position would controlling the conversation. Although it set the mood for the end of the clip. The simplicity of the killer was probably the best part.

Conor Mclean - The first thing I noticed about Silentium was the creepy piano music playing giving mean immediate unnerving feeling. The opening scene jump straight in to another scenario where someone is tied up by a masked villain. The fact the bad guy is masked creates the sense of fear in the unknown making me wonder who it is. The dark dingy environment also adds to the uncomftibale feeling that the scene gives off. The music intensifies by adding a low, steady bass line which reminded me of a heartbeat, causing me to relate to the character by feeling fear. The title screen its self gives the greatest indication that the film is a horror a film. The word 'Silentium' is giving a static effect that reminds me of other horror films such as The Ring. 'Silentium' also makes me thing of asylum, which is a spooky uncomfortable environment which also creates a desire to watch and find out what happens.
Red Vauighan - The use of different types of camera shot was a good idea, I particularly liked the point of view shot because it made the opening sequence feel more subversive. The opening sequence gave a good idea as to the story line and the music was a good choice as it built tension. Some of the speech was unclear, and the punch sound effect was a little comical, but it did not rain the tension. The setting and lighting fit well with the scenes.
Besty Babu - I thought the different camera shots and specific angles used made the film opening sequence very dramatic and very easily gained my interest. The plot was captivating. Overall the sequence in my opinion was outstanding! one improvement I would suggest is maybe make the villain look more scary and intense.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
Film Distribution

A film distributor is a company or individual responsible for the marketing of a film. The distributor may set the release date of a film and the method by which a film is to be exhibited or made available for viewing: for example, directly to the public either theatrically or for home viewing e.g.DVD, video-on-demand, download, television programs through broadcast syndication etc.. A distributor may do this directly, if the distributor owns the theatres or film distribution networks, or through theatrical exhibitors and other sub-distributors. A limited distributor may deal only with particular products, such as DVDs or Blu-ray, or may act in a particular country or market.

Who Would Distribute Silentium

I would say that Lionsgate Entertainment Corporation as they are independent, most of their films are well known for being horror movies so I think there would be no problem for Lionsgate to distribute Silentium as it could be a successful horror film. LionsGate most successful Horror film is Saw

Production

A production company is responsible for the development and filming of a specific production or media broadcast. In entertainment, the production process begins with the development of a specific project. Once a final script has been produced by the screenwriters, the production enters into the pre-production phase, most productions never reach this phase for financing or talent reasons. In pre-production, the actors are signed on and prepared for their roles, crew is signed on, shooting locations are found, sets are built or acquired, and the proper shooting permits are acquired for on location shooting. Actors and crew are handpicked by the producer, director, and casting director, who often use collaborators or referenced personnel to prevent untrusted or unwelcome people from gaining access to a specific production and compromising the entire production through leaks. Once a production enters into principal photography, it begins filming. Most productions are never cancelled once they reach this phase.

Code names are often used on bigger productions during filming to conceal the production's shooting locations for both privacy and safety reasons. In many cases, the director, producers, and the leading actors are often the only people with access to a full or majority of a single script. Supporting actors, background actors, and crew often never receive a full copy of a specific script to prevent leaks. Productions are often shot in secured studios, with limited to no public access, but they are also shot on location on secured sets or locations. Due to the exposure, when shooting in public locations, major productions often employ security to ensure the protection of the talent and crew working on a specific production. After filming is completed, the production enters into post production, which is handled by a post production company and overseen by the production company. The editing, musical score, visual effects, re-recording of the dialogue, and sound effects are "mixed" to create the final film, which is then screened at the final screening. Marketing is also launched during this phase, such as the release of trailers and posters. Once a final film has been approved, the film is taken over by the distributors, who then release the film.

Evaluation 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Character Social Groups In Silentium

The guy from Silentium on the left represents Detective Hoffman from the Saw serious but as more of a lower target audience as Silentium is for audience aged 15 upwards, whilst Saw is aimed at audience aged 18 upwards. Both characters are strong physical and mentally willing to get to their goal. They both are middle classed men, they both have hardly any friends or family so both of them don't really have a social group that they belong to. The audience likes a protagonist that has nothing to lose and is will to do whatever is necessary to get to their goal.

The two characters above are both the same for their social group as both of them are outsiders/outcasts that have not got any social skills at all as they live out of the way of people that live in towns and city's. The Silentium psycho killer is a toned down version of the guy in Wrong Turn as wrong turn is for audience aged 18 upwards and Silentium is for audience aged 15 upwards. The audience likes character/people that don't live in a normal day to day life and they like seeing them interact with people from towns and city's

Evaluation 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (i.e. of film openings)

Mise En Scene

Costume: The costumes in the opening title sequence had change throughout the process of the pre-production of this project. The axed killer has bandages around his head, we wanted the audience to keep guessing throughout the film who it could be which work from the responses of the target audience. The bandages also can suggest to the audience he could be recovering from a previous injury. That's why the bandages are white to show that the way he got them on his head was through nothing bad which is why they are white not any other colour. The high vis coat is what he wears on a daily bases as he works out around farms so he needs to be seen at night, he wears jeans as they are a strong material with blood stains on them, to show that he also kills animals or any life stock on his farm.
The man on the other hand is all in black which tells us that he is bringing death with him, this can also show that he is stronger as in other horror films there is always one wearing black who is always stronger than the others.

Setting: The setting was an easy place to get when in the pre-production side of the project. The dark dingy barn was the best place to put a horror film as it has the right atmosphere to put a horror film with all the dangerous equipment and tools in the barn. The reason why we didn't show the outside of the barn as we want to make the audience confused with the guy who is tied up, as this is the antagonist main home so it would make the guy feel uncomfortable with the audience as they both don't know anything about the place, by using the barn it made it feel more realistic as we didn't needed to make anything with our own hands or with CGI technology.

Props: the main items that where used were; Sack, Chair, Rope, Axe, Trolley. The items that I listed where the most important as the chair was needed to have the protagonist to be restrained to with the rope and the sack over his head to show the audience that he has been captured by a antagonist. The trolley was used to carry the other no so important props, the trolley was used to create tension between the characters and the audience as they want to know what is on it and what is the use of the props on the trolley. The Axe was the main prop as its the weapon of chose that the antagonist uses to kill his victims with, the axe being able to reach far as it is long tells us that the antagonist must be strong to be able to swing it properly, fast and on target.

Camera Work

Angles: The low angle that was used for the point of view shot of the protagonist, as he is about to be killed by the antagonist standing over him shows that he is more superior and dominate over the protagonist. Most of the angles where low as I wanted to show the power of the antagonist even though he was shorter than the protagonist.

Shots: I tried use hole rage of different shots with the cameras that we had but with the response that I got from the target audience about on particular shot which was the point of view shot as they said you don't get a lout of horror films with the point of view from the protagonist side of things.
The thing I would do now to improve on the project if I did it again is that I would have another point of view shot from the antagonist eyes.

Movement: There was hardly any camera movement in the opening sequence as there was no need for the camera to be moving but to only to be shaking to show that the protagonist is discombobulated to the new area that he is in.

Editing: The editing I wanted to make it slow so it gets the audience attention for the detail and it will also get the tension building for the audience as they will want to know what's going to happen.

Lighting & Acting

Lighting: Is one of the key component for the video as it helps to see the characters also it creates the realism of the set that i was using, the barn was filled with different light sources but we font that only using the light to the top left of us was the best place to have our main light source as it made dark points where we could have the killer walk in and out from.

Acting: The acting needed to be good so the audience could believe what is going on, on the screen. If the acting was wooden or the script was written straight forward then the audience could see what will happen next which will drag down the realism of the project.

Final Cut

This is the final title opening to Silentium it has a problem but it makes the video better i think as it is a horror film and the sound, sounds out of place which creates tension to the audience thing what the sound could be. The problem with this final video is that the sound from the video is trying to be louder thAn the music that I chose it to be with, I had forgot to make the music be more quieter then the sound for the video so it creates a crackle noise the crackling sound from the video is trying to overpower the music that I put with it, so you get short bursts of something but you can't tell if it is human or not.

Film Editing Schedule

Edititng Schedule

First:Put the videos in the correct time order/the order that they should be in to the story board.

Second:Put the titles in order and put the names of them in the text box to use to make the text appear on the video its self.

Third:The music needs to be over the top of the video.

Fourth:The Effects of the video its self-main one is to do the main title for the sequence.

Fifth:Go through the whole video and see if there are any changes that need to be made.

Film Editing

Film Editing

Video

First I started with putting the videos that we recorded in order to the new story board that we hadn't created as we had to change it on location as we did not have our female actor to to medical reasons. so I need to create a storyboard for this video.
As you can see from the image below that I am using Cyberlink PowerDirecrot 10, I used this software as it is essayer to use and better to make movies fast if you need to edit more or one video.

Titles

Next after putting the video recordings in order that is needed for the opening title sequence to make the story make sense and to be in the right order instead of having one scene with a guy tied up and in the next he is free and leaving the room then another scene showing the guy tied up again.

After the results of the last video about the titles being let's say crap as they were all different every time a credit was to show up, so that was not a good idea so this time I have kept the same thing throughout the title sequence. Each letter of a credit will come on in it's own time and the letters all disappear either all together or one at a time.

With the software I use it is so easy to use as you just need to type the name of the person who you are going to credit and move it to the place that you think it would look good at. The next part to the text edit is to add the effect you want to use when the text first appears and disappears, which is the main part to this opening title sequence as that is what we are getting marked on.

Sound

After putting the titles on the scenes and on the black outs next I needed to put in the music which will make the opening get noticed by the audience as it will create tension and make the audience want to see more as the music builds up anticipation to the main title of the opening sequence.

The way I added the sound was first to find a soundtrack that was free from copy right download it then import it in the video, but the sound was too short so I had to put the sound in twice but i had to cut it and attach it to the other one with out making it notice able to the audience who would be watching it, as it wouldn't make the scenes flow that would be showing on the screen at the same time.

A problem was to get the music and the video sound to work well with each other as I needed to have the video sound be heard over the music as it is important dialogue to the film. The way I did this that worked was to make the music quieter when there was sound and make the video sound louder to make it work and when it came to the part when there isn't much sound in the video I would mute it and leave the music to be the same volume which worked. The way to make the sound louder or quieter was simple as there was a time line for the music and video sound and on the line you would just have to pull the line down to make it quieter or mute it or pull it up to make it louder.

Effects

The effects was only used at the end of the video to make the word 'SILENTIUM' look like it was on an old T.V screen on static which had the best response by most of the people  who watched the video.
The way I made the static looking effect was by using the effect called 'Wind' that was avaIlable to me on my software that I sued to edit my video. The way to edit into the video was by simply dragging and dropping it on the effect time line, it had to be below the scene that I wanted that to be on as you can see from the image below.
