A film poster is a poster used to advertise a film. Studios often print several posters that vary in size and content for various domestic and international markets. They normally contain an image with text. Today's posters often feature photographs of the main actors.

The main role of the film poster is to reach out to the correct audience, by clearly displaying the genre of the film. Take ''ALIEN'' for instance this film is a science fiction horror film, we can state this by the Title of the film ''Alien'' which encourages the fact that this film will contain aliens throughout the film. which indicates to us that it is a science fiction film, the horror part is told through the Tagline which says ''In space no one can hear you scream'' this gives us the clear implication that this film will be a horror as the only reason you really scream is because you are scared in this instance the characters are screaming from the alien that could kill them on a spaceship i would predict as in the Tagline it included ''space'' this is why i said in a spaceship as that is the only way to be able to live unless they have inhabited a plaint.
The main feature of this poster is the alien egg rupturing with the stereotypical alien colour of green seeping out whilst glowing, the black back ground tells us that it is a dark film that might involve mystery, the back ground could mean that the alien lurks around in the shadows as we know the most scariest things come out of the unknown, from the shadows, from our own fear. Also with the background being black it is also empty so there is no where to run which means there is no safety for the character on the ship if the alien in in side the ship.
At the bottom of the poster shows the actors who will be staring in the film which could bring in more audience if they like that actor who is involved in the film then they are going to see how well he/she is acting in this film. With the poster it shows no characters so know body knows anything about the characters in the film which would make the audience watch it as they nothing about it.
